THE DAY AFTER

The day after Christmas. It's so hard to get up and go back to the routine of normal everyday life. For a month, you plan and shop for the day. Then its over. You have your pictures and memories...but getting back to the routine...it's hard.

I had such a wonderful, simple day. Nothing life shattering....just hubbie, the kids, my husband's family. It was great. My mother-in-law wasn't with us this year. She has Alzheimer's and is in a nursing home, but yesterday she said my father-in-law's name. She hasn't said it in...has to be a couple of years. I haven't seen my father-in-law that happy in a long time. Nice to have my kids home, see my niece and nephews...I even enjoyed cooking (I only cook once a year). Such a nice, enjoyable day.

Now, though, it's back to work.

Been doing a lot of thinking about this last year. Have to say, it's been interesting to say the least when it comes to my writing. I'm so appreciative of friends and readers. So much more so than last year. I have a deeper appreciation of everything around me. Thank you all.

So this last year...I've been busy. I have released more books than I ever have. It won't be like that this like this next year. I had three books released with Whiskey Creek that was written years ago that was released this year. The Tides of Charleston Series.

THE JUDAS KISS, THE PROMISE and ANOTHER NIGHT FALLS.
THE PROMISE

I also released the second book in the Winds of Betrayal Series, Ruse of Love.
This coming year, I will be revamping the look of Winds of Betrayal. Patriot Secrets will be revised and republished.

MY HOBBIT REVIEW

THE HOBBIT
I was so excited yesterday. I went to the Hobbit. I have been waiting for the release. I'll admit I've gone through withdrawal since the last film, Return of the King. I am a huge J RR Tolkien's fan. My girls are home for college break and they went with me. I had such a great time.

I was eager to see how Peter Jackson would evolve one book into three movies. While I'll concede that the plot may have been somewhat thin, I enjoyed it immensely. It is not the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but watching the Hobbit was like going home and seeing friends you haven't seen in a long time.

I read where the movie was filmed 48-frames-per-second. Now, I'm not a technical person, but I loved the feel of the movie. Kinda made you feel as if you were there.

Just reading over some of the reviews of the Hobbit, I can't say I disagree with what they are saying. But to me, it doesn't matter. The Hobbit is all part of the world J RR Tolkien created and I loved it. If you are like me, you'll enjoy it also.

I have a special place in my heart for the Lord of the Rings. The series has inspired many a person, including myself. Lord of the Rings probably was my biggest influence when it came to writing my epic fantasy series, Whispers of a Legend. It is a standard to compare any epic fantasy series. I will always admire J RR Tolkien's writing ability and hold his works close to my heart.

Epic fantasy hold the same characterizations—the ingredients that make it a fantasy—magical worlds and mystical beings where the story line revolves around the mysterious nature of our hero's heritage. The difference with Whispers of a Legend, our hero is a heroine caught between two worlds.

ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS

ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER
I grew up anticipating watching Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer every year on TV. It was part of Christmas. Did you know Robert L. May wrote Rudolph as a poem for his employer, Montgomery Ward back in 1939?

I mention this for a couple of reasons. I love Rudolph. I loved Rudolph as a child because of all the adorable characters: Rudolph, Hermey, Clarice, Sam the Snowman, Yukon Cornelius, The Abominable Snow Monster (Bumble), and Santa. But do you remember the Island of Misfit Toys—Charlie-the-Box, the Spotted Elephant, Bird Fish…

As an adult I love the story of Rudolph for numerous reasons. What a great way to inspire children to accept others who are a little different. Because when you think about it Rudolph was all about bullying. Wasn’t it?

Never sell anyone short because you never know when you might need them. We do need that difference. To survive in this world, we all need to embrace differences. If we don’t it would become a world of Stepford Wives.

Have you ever felt like you live on the island of misfit toys? That you are that Charlie in the Box? That you don’t quite fit into the peg on the board… That’s okay.

I have a thing about bullying in any form. I was at work the other night. I was working with a couple of people who might be considered candidates to live on the island of misfit toys. I guess I’m different because instead of seeing their failures, I see what makes them shine. If you only focus on the negative, you will miss out on the light inside of a person.

This blog today is a tad personal because I’ve seen what bullying can do to a child. My daughter was bullied when we first moved to the town we live in now. She was only in fifth grade, but was never accepted. Think of Mean Girls. Everyone wants to fit in and liked. Even today my daughter who now is in college, I can still see the effects that bullying has left. Bullying destroys confidence. And lack of self-confidence leads to a multitude of issues especially in children.

It isn’t only children though that are bullied. I learned that this year with my writing. It’s not a good feeling. I know what I have gone through and I can’t imagine a child questioning themselves.

I know what it’s like to be different. I have always walked to a different beat. Growing up, I was different than my siblings. I always thought differently. I never kept back my opinions either, which got me into more trouble than you can imagine. I still remember my mother being embarrassed that I came in second place in a writing essay contest about the Civil War when I was in middle school. Not because I came in second place, but because the teacher told her that I would have come in first place if I hadn’t said I thought the South was wrong about seceding from the Union. My sister hid the essay from me and threatened to show it at times when she thought it would embarrass me. She still has it because I never cared if she did show it. I wrote it and believed it. But at the same time, it hurt because my family thought I had done something wrong. It hurts at times to stay true to your beliefs.

Being right doesn’t necessarily mean you will be supported. I believe that you have to find the strength within yourself.

Over the centuries people have been ridiculed for thinking outside the box. Can you imagine the person who tried to convince people that the world was round? That you didn’t just fall off the edge when you got to the end. Can you imagine the courage it took to sail off on that ship to prove your theory?

Sometimes it takes bravery. Other times, we just want to exist in a peaceful environment and live our lives.

I will admit this year I considered stopping writing. I took so much enjoyment from writing and meeting both authors and writers until last February. I lived in a little bubble world where I wasn’t making much with my writing, but was having the time of my life being part of a community.

Oh…the reality of the world outside can be harsh and cruel. In my little bubble world, there is a place for us all. In reality, it’s like the show Survivor—to outwit, outlast, outplay the other contestants. Nice guys don’t always end up first.

What I have learned over the last year is what I really want, I have. I am fortunate that I have a loving husband, children and friends. I need to write because I enjoy it. I can’t worry about the other factors that come into play. I can’t and won’t worry about the things I don’t control. The only thing I can control is what I write.

So I fit better into the world of misfit toys than I do in the outside world. It’s who I am…that naïve country bumpkin who still dreams.

So this Christmas, grab your child, your grandchild, or just by yourself and watch Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer. You don’t have to wait for it to be shown on TV. It's out there somewhere to be seen on DVD, on demand…it is out there. Enjoy it!

Happy Holidays!

Not promoting any books today, but I do have a new website with all my books and pen names.

Holiday Shopping...

It's December and I haven't begun any shopping. I'm so behind. I have my Christmas decorations out, but my Christmas tree isn't up. So much has been going on. The good news is that my mother is doing so much better! Now I can focus on my many projects in December.

A few of friends are offering some great giveaways and contest this month. Great giveaways including Kathleen Brooks, Melody Anne, Ruth Cardello...so many. You have to check them out. I have donated a few books to the cause including Another Night Falls and Whispers of a Legend, Volume I.

I have created a new website, Jerri Hines, A World Filled With Romance which includes all my titles. If you have a moment, check it out and let me know what you think.

My first post was about Strong Female Protagonists.

The stories I write have strong female heroines. I write all different genres: historical fiction, epic fantasy, and romance. Then you might wonder how I write about strong women when I write romance. I mean most women read romance to fantasize about their prince rushing in and rescuing the damsel in distress. Romantic fantasy? Without question…I’m the first to acknowledge that the romance genre is a fantasy. Why do women love romance so much? The answer is simple. We grew up on fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen to Charles Perrault’s tales; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White…
So are women really damsels in distress waiting to be rescued? If that was the case, most of us would still be waiting…wouldn’t we?

So can women relate to strong female protagonists? Can men? Again the answer is simple…yes. Strong female protagonists have been embraced throughout literature. The difference is perception. The first one that comes to mind for me is Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre was a woman of strong conviction and character. When someone wrote that behind every good man there is a great woman, they would have to had a woman like Jane Eyre in mind. Women are different than men. Women don’t have to be Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! or Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!” to exhibit strength. Women have a quiet strength within us which is as powerful as any physical feat.

Not that some women can’t exhibit physical strength. A great example is Katniss Everdeen. Suzanne Collins did an excellent job in creating Katniss into a believable woman of strength and courage, but Katniss more powerful moments in the book had nothing to do with her physical prowess. Who could ever forget Katniss holding the poison berries in her hand and then putting them in her mouth? With one act she began a revolution.

And we can’t forget Éowyn from Lord of the Rings and the classic line “no living man can kill me.” I loved it when it was Éowyn who thrust her sword into the Witch-king of Angmar.

So where does the inspiration come from these strong female protagonists? Examples of strong female protagonist are not fantasy. Though, most women don’t seek the acknowledgement for their sacrifice, courage or bravery. A few examples come to mind: Joan of Arc, Elizabeth I, and Irena Sendler… Irena Sendler? If you don’t know her, don’t feel bad. I only learned about her a couple of years ago. She was the leader of a group of women who risked their lives to save Jewish children during WWII. Irena Sendler is the epitome of a true hero. No one should ever question whether women can be a strong female protagonist.

The difference between a male alpha hero and a strong female protagonist is that most times the woman becomes a heroine out of necessity.

My series, Whispers of a Legend, centers around a strong female protagonist.

Kela Calledwdele was born with a destiny, a Euchoun with only one purpose in life...to protect. Torn between two worlds, Kela soon discovers she is the hope of both. Now she must find the courage to face the destiny fate has dictated to her. Half Witheleghean and half Sordarin, she knows well her parents gave the ultimate sacrifice to give her a chance to live. Yet, in so doing, they have left Kela unprepared to face the dangers that await her. Whispers of a Legend is the story of Kela’s journey.
Whispers of a Legend began with…

Whispers_(Part_One)_(72dpi_900x600) (1)

Shadows of the Past- begins Whispers of a Legend saga which follows Kela's battle to embrace her destiny, where as a young woman unsure of her ability and her confidence in facing the challenges before her to where she emerges as a strong leader who learns to lean upon her own strength, to stand not behind, but side by side with her warrior. Vision of Destiny. Trained for only one purpose, to protect the innocent from an evil that threatens to destroy her world, Kela has never questioned her destiny. The enemy has never been in doubt and her path laid clear before her. Now all is blurred. Over the years, the Sordarins have slept well secure in the knowledge that the Great One guards over them and protects them from this Nuxvenom. Now, though, our world has once more been targeted; Asmeodai’s evil looms on the horizon and fear lives in the hearts of the Sordarins for our very existence is threatened.
I, Kela Calledwdele, have been trained for one purpose—to protect my people from this evil threat of Asmeodai. I did not ask for this, but have embraced my destiny. The path before me has never been easy, nor do I expect my tribulations to lessen as I continue my journey, but I hold to this destiny for I hold to my faith in the Great One.
With the acknowledgement as King Edulf’s granddaughter, Kela is swept into a world strange to her. Moreover, Kela discovers the world she now walks harbors its own dangers. Holidays Gifts—GO FOR IT!

It's that time of the year! The holidays are upon us and it's time to get your favorite people their special gifts. So much to choose from...I mean the commercials...I'm like a little kid. I want it all! There is one phone, I think its a Samsung, I want. Not because I need it, but because it seems to be the neatest thing. Click it together with another Samsung phone and magic. I'm not sure what kind of magic, but it looks like it's awesome! My husband laughs at me. He told me I could never figure out how to use it. He's right, but boy I want it. I love their commercials too. You know the ones where everyone is waiting in line for the iphone..3, no- 4, no-wait it's 5 and the people in line envy the Samsung hoping the next model of iphone will catch up with the Samsung. Love it!

Really, though, I'll stick with my dinosaur model. I know how to text so I can keep in touch with my kids. It's all I really need. Besides I already know what my husband got me for Christmas—Jason Aldean tickets to Fenway Park next summer. The BEST! I can't wait. All I've been doing is listening to his CD's. See how behind the times I am...

But...I am excited about Cyber Monday. I have so many books to download. I do love my nook...and kindle. Okay...maybe I over do it a tad. I had a kindle, but love Barnes and Noble. So many presents to buy, so many decisions to make. So take a moment. Sit down relax. Grab your kindle, nook, ipad...whatever and grab yourself a great read for a little escape. You will thank me after all that shopping.

HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING

I love Thanksgiving. What a great time of the year to reflect on what's important in life. I have Thanksgiving off this year. Haven't had Thanksgiving off in years, part of working in a hospital. But what I'm most thankful for this year when it comes to my writing...you the readers.

Over the last year, I have been fortunate to have met some great writers, read some great books, and hopefully published a few good reads myself.

Whispers of a Legend series has been close to my heart.  I just released Part Four-
Time of the Nuxvenom.

AMAZON, BARNES AND NOBLE, SMASHWORDS

Amazon, Barnes and Noble
Going Indie has been a journey in itself. I have found the biggest obstacle has been the concept that as an Indie writer my books might suffer from lack of edits. Besides the fact that they all my books have been edited...how does one go about to prove that fact? I thought the best way was to go to a reputable place to get it reviewed. I choose to place both Whispers of a Legend, Volume I and Daughter of Deceit into the Writer's Digest Self-Publishing Writing Contest back last spring. Whether you win or not you get a honest evaluation of your work. How much more reputable evaluation can you get than from Writer's Digest?

Here's what they said about Whispers of a Legend... WRITER'S DIGEST SELF-PUBLISHING WRITING COMPETITION

Whispers of a Legend Volume One by Carrie James Haynes is a powerful, otherworldly tale sure to delight fantasy readers of all ages. The story is well written by an author who clearly loves this genre. The front cover graphic is attractive and has just the right amount of color to grab the attention of prospective readers. The back cover copy is powerful and shows readers just enough of a hint of what’s inside. The prologue gives sufficient back story to show character motivation. Dialogue throughout the book comes across natural and true to the characters. There are no glaring errors that would pull readers from the story.

Now onward to Daughter of Deceit which is now Seductive Secrets under my new pen name Colleen Connally.

Here's what they said about Daughter of Deceit... WRITER'S DIGEST SELF-PUBLISHING WRITING COMPETITION

Daughter of Deceit by Carrie James Haynes is an intriguing tale of suspense guaranteed to keep readers riveted from the first page to the last. Ms. Haynes does a very good job of setting the stage for this story. The front cover is attractive and will grab the attention of prospective readers. The back cover copy is interesting. The author bio in the back of the book gives readers enough information to help them relate. The story starts in the right place and continues at a nice pace that quickens and slows when needed. There are no glaring errors that will pull the reader out of the story.

What I could do better for both stories- both said the covers especially placing of my name as the author.

I don't think you can get a more fair, honest evaluation.

Patriot Secrets
Ruse of Love
Now for what I have planned...I closed my regular website. Never went over to it. I'm going to bring up another blog just for my works...all of them together. All my books. Just to let you know Patriot Secrets will be coming down on November 27th. The rights are reverting back to me. I want to revamp the covers of both Winds of Betrayal Series. So if you want Patriot Secrets, grab it before it goes down...at least for the time being. Probably looking at the beginning of the year. Have to catch up with myself.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Keep reading! Have a good one!

THE VOICE

I love The Voice. There is just something about the show that ropes me in. I love the coaches, especially Blake. I'm country what can I say. But I think there's another reason I like The Voice so well. It's their premise that it's the voice they are looking for...and for the most part that's what happens.

The coaches, all of them- Blake, Adam, Christina, and Ceelo- are nice and respectful to the contestants.  I never could stand Simon Cowell. Don't get me wrong. I watched American Idol for years. I don't anymore nor do I watch the X-Factor. I don't like having a show where it sets up people for failure and we sit and watch it as entertainment. You know what I mean. Those poor people that think they can sing and try only to get shot down and basically humiliated.

We all want to be good at something. It's human nature. Honestly, it takes a great deal of courage to at least try to go after your dream. We all need to dream. Dreams give us hope.

So back to The Voice. There are several reasons I like The Voice. One of them is there isn't a contestant I don't like. I wouldn't be disappointed if any of the final twelve won. I do have my favorites. Okay, I'll admit it...I'm a huge Blake Shelton fan so I'm partial to anybody on his team. But the reason for this blog today is about one of the final twelve on Ceelo's team, Nicholas David.

Don't know the man, but boy do I love him. He's got a great voice and does his own thing. Blake said the other night 'Thank God for The Voice' because Nicholas David probably wouldn't have had a shot at fame otherwise. But you know the biggest reason I love Nicholas David...you can just tell he loves what he does.

Not everyone has to fit into a certain little mold to be successful.

It reminds me why I began my series Whispers of a Legend. I chose the fantasy format for a partial reason. It gave me freedom to write. The premise of Whispers— it's okay to be less than perfect.

I hate bullies. I don't understand their reasoning because it's the direct opposite of mine. I look for the good in people. I enjoy watching others succeed and working hard toward my own success. Bullies take joy by inflicting pain in others. Insincere with themselves they try to bring down what they perceive as some one weaker. Bullies latch onto what they point out is a weakness. Bullies want to destroy confidence and replace it with doubt. Bullies place themselves on a pedestal and proclaim themselves righteous.

In Whispers I wanted to show that even hero/heroines make mistakes. The most important thing to remember is don't lose faith in yourself. Hold to what you believe in. Don't expect perfection out of yourself, but don't stop trying to achieve the best you can be. Above all—don't give up.

I just heard a new song by Gary Allan called Every Storm Runs Out of Rain. Listen to it. Great song.

When I began Whispers of a Legend Saga, I wrote it because my heart went out to the teenage victims of bullies. My heart broke when I heard stories of teenagers committing suicide because of bullying. Growing up is hard enough. No one needs the added stress of being bullied, especially when teenager's have such tunnel vision. Saying all that, teenagers aren't the only ones that get bullied.

It would be a wonderful world if we all respected each other. While it may be an impossible task, it is one we all should strive for because everyone should understand there is no perfection in this world. Perfection is an illusion; not a one of us is perfect.

SANDY'S COMING...Charge up that Kindle, Nook and Ipad!

Charge up your Kindles, Nooks and ipads. I have. It's coming! I dread it. Seems over the last few years we have had some severe storms that knock out our electricity...for a while. Last winter I lost electricity for three days! My neighbors lost theirs for over a week.

I say this for a couple of reasons. First if you don't hear from me for a few days, you'll know the reason. Second, if you're in the area that it's being affected...be prepared. Charge up your devices with some great books. I have. This is the last few days of Octoberfest.

Since its right before Halloween....
